It appears I am not the only person who feels that OpenLDAP (or Fedora Directory Server) is a little too much for a simple contacts server. Is there not a better solution out there somewhere?

Well, a basic installation of OpenLDAP is probably smaller than the other database you’d install and offers, out of the box, solid security and excellent performance. There are numerous HOWTOs on how to set up a contact list and connect it to client applications and no new development is required.
You can download a pre-build binary version of OpenLDAP with OpenSSL, Cyrus SASL, and BDB all coordinated and tested from http://www.symas.com for FREE (Linux and most Unix platforms, Windows coming).

Very interesting Marty, the Symas site is quite awful to navigate around, which doesn’t say much for the software they’re providing. I’m not looking for a closed source fully packaged LDAP server, I’m more than capable of getting OpenLDAP working myself, I just find the whole LDAP protocol for saving a few contacts on a server a little OTT. LDAP is intended for the enterprise, which I certainly am not.
